Inventory of William Green , Yeoman of Rowner

A true inventory of the goods and chattells of William Green late of Rowner in the county of Southampton, yoeman, deceased. Taken and indifferntly appraised by Thomas Dash , Robert Brooker and George Beard and after the decease of the said William Green and his wife Mary on the fifth day of January 1647.

In the hall One joined table and frame, four joined stools, one form, one cupboard,

two rush chairs, one basket cradle. £1 10s 0d

Two pairs of cotterells, two andirons, one chaffing dish, one old toasting iron and spit,

two smoothing irons, one house lock, one fire pan. 6s 8d

In the kitchen one salting trough, one cheese press, one brewing tub, one covell(?),

one powdering tub, one old turnd(?), one plat(?) and other lumber. 13s 4d

In the chamber one joined bedstead, one bed flock and feathers, one feather bolster,

two feather pillows, one pair of old blankets, one coverlet, two hull pillows(?). £3 10s 0d

One chest, one box, two coffers, two swords, one pair of boots, one pair of spurs,

one hatt. £1 10s 0d

One brass pot, one little kettle, two little skillets, one brass candlestick, one brass

skimmer, one great kettle, one brass ladle, one brass lamp, one iron pot. £1 2s 0d

Eight pewter platters, one pewter dish, one pewter salt, four spoons, one pewter

candlestick. 15s 0d

In money. 5s 0d

Four pewter platters, one pewter flagon, one pewter pint, one small pewter jug,

one pewter candlestick which were given Mary the daughter of the said William

Green at her baptising by you witnesses and her grandfather John Hobbs and

her uncle John Green. £1 0s 0d

In the loft over the hall one boarded bedstead, two hull beds, one feather bolster,

one coverlet, one trundle bedstead, matt and cords. 19s 0d

Oats – four bushells and a sack. 10s 0d

Received timber for plowboot and cartboot and old iron. 18s 0d

Other lumber. 1s 0d

In the loft over the chamber three bushells of beans and other lumber. 18s 6d

In the room over the kitchen one muskett and bandoliers. 5s 0d

Four bushells of barley. 13s 4d

Three flitches of bacon. £1 15s 0d

In the buttery three small beer pestells(?), a kneading trough, a small parcel

of malt in a tubb, one old churn, one brollet(?), one earthen butter pot,

one wood platter, one kiver(?), two wood bottles, one iron peele, one fire fork

and a cole rake. Shelves and other lumber. 19s 4d

One bill, one hacking hook, two hatchets, one trowell, one spitter, four iron wedges,

one handsaw, one iron foote(?). 7s 8d

Two prongs, a pair of prong grainds(?), a yoke, a plow chain. 5s 0d

An old horse harness. 5s 0d

In the barn wheat in mow by estimation two quarters. Oats five quarters.

A parcel of horse meal [meat?] by estimation one small load. £10 10s 0d

One prong, one half bushell, one gallon, one peck, one wynnd sheet,

on Billy (?) two pecks. 9s 0d

One old cart and old wheels, one [set] plow wheels and plow board,

fynd(?) harness, one dungpot [manure wagon] , one wheel barrow and other stuff

and lumber. £2 12s 0d

Four acres of wheat in the field. £6 0s 0d

Two hogges in the gate. £1 5s 0d

Four kine and one calfe. £16 10s 0d

Seven poultry, two cocks, five pullets, a ladder, a hogtree and other lumber in the gate. 7s 6d

Her wearing apparel. £2 10s 0d

One bible and (-?-) other books. 10s 0d

Notes.

1. John Stares signature is complete, the others half missing.

2. This inventory is unusual in listing the poultry.

3. As the wife died at the same time as her husband this inventory may be more complete

than some others.

4. The Parish Register, (Portsmouth Record Office, CHU 46/1A) which appears to have

been written up at a later date shows William Green as being buried in December and his

wife Mary being buried on Jan. 4th. Their daughter Ann was buried on Jan.8th and a John

Green (son?) was buried in December. 5. At least twelve people died in Rowner between December and March 1647.
